The Photographer needs help

This is pathetic of me, I took a 2 term class on photography in Collage but I can't remember anything, so I always use my text books for reference, but my son lost them and all I have is the little of the classes I can remember.

Can anyone help me? I forgot how the lens of a camera takes the picture in a film camra.I use digital so I never needed to know since then, but now my girls keep pestering me and I can't get an answer off Google or wikipedia or anything else, they all said something different.

Does anyone know a good photographer, maybe someone that majored in it?
